We hope you enjoy reading about the ins and outs of Texas windstorm roofing requirements and feel free to share this piece to family, friends, or colleagues to encourage them to have their roof inspected and repaired accordingly.

Strict Rules & Regulations

There are often strict rulings and regulations with structural components of a home, and for good reason. You wouldn’t want your home’s roof to be inadequate and be a danger to you or your family. To obtain home insurance in windstorm stricken regions, you must have the proper windstorm roofing. Your roofing must be able to withstand strong gusts of winds of up to 100mph and gusts of wind three seconds or more up to 110mph. If you happen to reside on the Gulf Coast of Texas, your home must be able to withstand gusts of up to 128mph. These rules and regulations are meant for your safety and wellbeing and will ultimately help you and your family have a protected home from the seasonally strong winds in your region.Home Inspections

A home inspection will determine what needs to be completed in order to have your home up to par with the aforementioned rules and regulations. Your home inspector will ensure the roofing material is at least 1/7 of an inch thick and must be used as a roof decking. Your home inspector will also look for proper nailing of the roof decking. The plywood decking mst be nailed every four inches at the edge of the roof and every six inches within the center areas of the roof. Fasteners must be at least 0.131 x 2.5 inches and they must sit flush with the platform.

Out with the Old, In with the New

In order to have your home’s roof renovated, there must be a fifteen pound minimum layer of new shingling placed upon the preexisting shingles. This is due to the fact new fasteners tend to not hold their place well when attached to old roofing. If the home has already had two layers of previously new shingles placed upon the roof, all layers must be stripped and replaced with brand new roofing. This is implemented to prevent decay and rot from forming over time.
