Choosing the Materials For Your Deck
The deck material that you choose will help determine your budget and the type of maintenance the deck will need; there are several materials to choose from, including pressure treated wood, composite, and vinyl/plastic boards. - Pressure Treated Wood: The price for pressure treated wood ranges between $3.00 and $4.00 per square foot, or upwards of $5.00 per square foot for hardwood. Wood is a great choice for tight budgets, but there is more maintenance required to keep the wood in good condition.
- Composite: Composite materials can range from $7.00 to $10.00 per square foot. The material is a mixture of wood fibers and plastics that won’t shrink or expand due to humidity. Even though the cost is higher, the amount of maintenance required is much less than hardwood.
- Vinyl/Plastic: This material can cost between $4.25 and $8.50 per square foot. Though there is very little maintenance, vinyl/plastic decks are more likely to be damaged by extreme heat, so it may not be the best option for the Texas climate.
